Retention Certificate

Any South African that wishes to take up citizenship in another country is required to apply with the DHA (or their closest South African mission or consulate abroad) to retain their SA citizenship. If you do not wish to lose your South African citizenship, you must apply to maintain your citizenship before applying for citizenship in another country.

Description

Application for the retention of RSA citizenship is an application that MUST be made before one acquires foreign nationality.

South African citizens who take up foreign citizenship without applying for retention of South African will lose their SA citizenship. Persons under the age of 18 years do not need to apply for retention of their South African Citizenship, as they will not lose their citizenship whilst still minors

How to Apply

After completing your online order, please email the following documents to info@certificatesrsa.co.za:

  • Retention Application form (download here) fully completed
  • Determination application form (download here)
  • Copy of the ID
  • Copy of the Passport
  • Copy of applicants Birth certificate (abridged or unabridged) we can obviously expedite either of these if necessary.
  • Proof of payment

Upon receipt of the above, we will prepare the documentation and submit it to the Department of Home Affairs.

Once the letter has been issued and obtained we will send you a scanned copy of it and then we can courier to you at an additional cost (see additional costs tab).

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

  • Application forms must be handwritten.
  • Application forms MUST NOT be signed and dated.
  • The applicant (person applying on your behalf) will do so.
  • To be clear, handwritten applications without a date and signature can be emailed to us - we do not need you to courier the forms.

Lead time

Approximately: 3 - 4 weeks

Variations in delivery times from the Department of Home Affairs fluctuate. We cannot and will not be held responsible or liable for any costs incurred due to late or non delivery.

Additional costs

Cash deposits: If you will be making a cash deposit please include R50.00 for banking charges, or a separate invoice will be issued.

International payments: If paying from an international account, please include bank charges of R250.00 per transaction, or a separate invoice will be issued.

Courier: Once the certificate/s are ready they will be sent to you via courier. Please select the correct courier option when placing your order. If you are unsure about which region to select, please choose "Please send me a separate quote" and we will send you a separate invoice. If you choose an incorrect region (eg. if you select "Courier South Africa - Main Centre" but reside in a remote/outlying area in South Africa), a separate invoice will be issued to cover any additional costs.

We make use of DHL for courier services. Once the parcel has been collected from us it is out of our control and any queries should be directed to DHL directly.

Please note that from time to time the CRC and HA experiences backlogs and turnaround times listed on our website cannot be guaranteed. Loadshedding is putting a lot of pressure on the system and affecting applications and turnaround times. Kindly take this into consideration when making travelling plans or have deadlines.
