What is an Apostille?

An Apostille is an official certificate issued by a competent authority, such as the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) or the High Court, which verifies the authenticity of the signature, seal or stamp on a South African public document.

An Apostille allows your document to be recognised for official use in countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention of 1961. If your destination country is not a member of the Convention, your documents may require Authentication and Legalisation instead. We assist clients throughout South Africa and internationally with Apostille and Authentication services for documents used in countries worldwide.

When Do You Need an Apostille?

You may require an Apostille if you're using South African documents outside South Africa for official or legal purposes.

You may need an Apostille when:

  • Applying for a visa, residency or citizenship
  • Working overseas
  • Studying abroad
  • Getting married in another country
  • Registering a birth or marriage overseas
  • Conducting business internationally
  • Using South African legal or personal documents abroad

If you're unsure whether your documents require an Apostille or Authentication, simply Contact Us and we'll guide you through the correct process.

Common documents include:

  • Birth Certificates
  • Marriage Certificates
  • Police Clearance Certificates
  • Educational Qualifications
  • Powers of Attorney
  • Company Documents

Frequently Asked Questions

What documents can be apostilled in South Africa?

We can assist with a wide range of South African documents, including birth certificates, marriage certificates, death certificates, police clearance certificates, academic qualifications, powers of attorney, notarised documents and other official records. If you're unsure whether your document can be apostilled, contact us and we'll advise you.

How long is an Apostille valid?

An Apostille Certificate does not have an expiry date. However, the organisation or authority requesting your documents may require the underlying document, such as a Police Clearance Certificate, to have been issued within a specific period.

Can a copy of my document be apostilled?

This depends on the type of document. Government-issued documents generally require the original document, while certain private documents may first need to be certified by a Notary Public before they can be apostilled. We'll assess your documents and advise you on the correct process before your application begins.

What's the difference between an Apostille and Authentication?

An Apostille is used for documents intended for countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention.

If your destination country is not a member of the Convention, your documents will usually require Authentication and legalisation instead. If you're unsure which process applies, we'll advise you on the correct requirements for your destination country.
