If you need to use a South African marriage certificate overseas, you may need an apostille or another form of legalisation. The first—and most important—step is making sure you have the correct certificate.
An apostille authenticates the signature and official seal on a South African public document. It does not confirm that the information in the document is correct, and it does not guarantee acceptance for every purpose.

An apostille is a certificate used to authenticate a public document between countries where the Hague Apostille Convention applies. South Africa has been a party to the Convention since 1995. You should still confirm that the Convention applies between South Africa and the destination country and that the receiving institution requires an apostille.
Check the current Hague Apostille Convention status table and confirm the requirements with the relevant embassy, consulate or receiving authority.
The exact requirement depends on the destination country, receiving institution and purpose of use. The authority requesting the document should confirm the certificate type, permitted document age, translation requirements and legalisation route.
DIRCO states that a marriage certificate issued by the marriage officer is not accepted for legalisation. You need the appropriate original marriage certificate issued by Home Affairs. DIRCO also does not legalise certified copies of marriage certificates.
Current DIRCO requirements should always be checked before submission. If you are unsure, contact CertificatesRSA and tell us which document you hold and where it will be used.
Ask the foreign authority which marriage certificate it requires, whether it must be recently issued, whether an apostille or authentication is needed and whether a certified or sworn translation is required.

Before submission, check that the certificate is original, legible, signed and stamped where required, not laminated and acceptable to the receiving authority.
The original document is submitted to DIRCO's Legalisation Section. DIRCO verifies the official signature and seal and issues either an Apostille Certificate or a Certificate of Authentication, depending on the destination.
After processing, the legalised document is collected or returned. CertificatesRSA can manage checking, submission, follow-up, collection and return delivery as part of the agreed service.
An apostille generally applies where the Hague Apostille Convention is in force between South Africa and the destination country. Other destinations may require a Certificate of Authentication followed by embassy or consular legalisation. Tell us the destination country and purpose so the correct route can be assessed.
Processing times depend on whether you already have the correct certificate, the legalisation route, submission method and current government workloads. Any turnaround time provided by CertificatesRSA is an estimate, not a guarantee.
