A Retention Certificate is issued by the Department of Home Affairs in South Africa, and allows you maintain your South African citizenship when acquiring citizenship in a foreign country.
Before acquiring foreign nationality, an application for the retention of your South African citizenship must be made. A person that fails to apply for a retention before acquiring a foreign nationality, will result in the loss of their SA citizenship.
If the person is under the age of 18 years, a retention of their South African Citizenship will not be required.
